District of Columbia requires fire watch whenever your building is occupied. Residential buildings are considered occupied 24/7.

Commercial/Industrial locations are considered occupied whenever ANY person is inside the building. This includes customers, employees, janitors or any other people.

The District of Columbia Fire Marshal uses the following formula to determine the number of personnel required per hour.

Formula:

1 person for every 2 floors

1 person for fire control room or lobby

If 6 or more people, add 1 for every 6 to provide breaks.

Fire watch must have a minimum of 2 fire watch.

Examples:
1 floor = 2 fire watch

4 floors = 3 fire watch

5 floor = 4 fire watch

6 floors= 4 fire watch
